Project Dawn

Adventure.Community.Opportunity.

A Planet Trotter initiative connecting rural development, responsible tourism, outdoor and adventure sports, education and sustainable development, documented from the field.

What is Dawn?

The beginning oftwilight, beforesunrise.

"The time that marks the beginning of twilight before sunrise for the communities living in remote locations of India, because what starts here will change the world."

Project Dawn began in 2019, on a recce to open a rafting route in a remote corner of Uttarakhand. What the team found instead were small communities living without proper roads, electricity or hospitals, and a need for hope from an outside world that hardly knew they existed. Three villages were adopted, and Dawn was born: rural development through responsible tourism, mixing eleven Sustainable Development Goals with outdoor and adventure sports.

It is not a charity model and it is not a holiday. Travellers, volunteers and athletes come into the field; the villages gain skills, income and infrastructure; and everything that happens is documented as it happens.

The challenge

What the fielddocumented.

Data gathered by adopting three villages in a remote location of Uttarakhand. These are documented field observations from specific communities, not generalisations about rural India.

  • Migration away from the villages
  • Basic amenities
  • Women's hygiene
  • Education
  • Electricity
  • Access to hospitals
  • Means of daily wages
  • Water scarcity
  • Connectivity to the nearby village and city
  • Jobs

The model

From understandingto opportunity.

The Project Dawn approach. Not every stage has been implemented everywhere: the Valley of River pilot has carried it furthest.

01

Understand the community

Live in the place. Listen before planning.

02

Identify opportunities

What the landscape, culture and people already offer.

03

Connect people & places

Bring travellers, volunteers and skills to the valley.

04

Develop experiences

Treks, rivers, homestays and village life, designed responsibly.

05

Train & build capacity

Survival, wilderness, river and hosting skills for local people.

06

Create local opportunity

Homestays, local guiding, new farming techniques, digital literacy.

07

Generate revenue

Income that stays in the villages that host the work.

08

Strengthen the community

A place people can stay in, not one they must leave.

Documented outcomes

Documented fieldinterventions.

Each entry carries its location, date, programme and source. They are field interventions, recorded as they happened, not impact claims.
